A parallelogram is a four-sided quadrilateral with both pairs of opposite sides parallel, as shown in Figure below. The area of the parallelogram is calculated using the following formula:

A = (base). (height) = b.h

The perimeter of a parallelogram is calculated using the following formula:

P = 2a + 2b

The area of a parallelogram is always expressed in square units, and the perimeter of a parallelogram is always expressed in the original units.

Example:

Calculate the area and perimeter of a parallelogram with base (b) =

4´, height (h) = 3´, a = 5´ and b = 4´. Be sure to include units in your

answer.

Solution:

A = b.h

A = (4)(3)

A = 12 square feet

Perimeter = 2a + 2bP = 2(5) + 2(4)

P = 10 + 8

P = 18 feet.

The perimeter is equal to 18 feet.
